The Wampanoag tribe were, before the 1600s, the only inhabitants of the lands in southeastern Massachusetts and the Acushnet River. Bartholomew Gosnold, who explored the Cape Cod area in 1602 arrived at the site that is present-day New Bedford but did not settle the area but returned to England with his crew.
Half a century later in 1652, New Bedford was first settled by Europeans. The English settlers in Plymouth Colony bought the land from the chief of the Wampanoag tribe. The land was then used by the settlers to build the town of Old Dartmouth which comprises present-day Dartmouth, New Bedford, Fairhaven, Acushnet and Westport.
New Bedford used to be known as Bedford Village and it separated from Old Dartmouth to become incorporated as a town in 1787 after the American Revolutionary War. The name of the town was suggested by some prominent residents in the community; the Russell Family.
The town of New Bedford officially became a city in 1847 and its first mayor was Abraham Hathaway Howland. At about the same time, the economy of New Bedford began to boom with the growth of the whaling industry due to the location of the town and its deep harbor. Many of the families in the city were involved in the whaling activities.
