The town of Narragansett is namesake of the Narragansett Native American tribe. The meaning of the word is people of the small point. The town site was part of the Narragansett County when the English colonists arrived in the area.
The name of the town was chosen so as to distinguish itself from other towns that were named after English towns. Narragansett was incorporated as a town in 1901.
The early residents of the area were primarily involved in grazing, farming and fishing activities. The population of the town increased only slowly in the 17th and 18th century. As industrialization came to the town, mills were built and shipbuilding activities commenced. Large plantations also emerged in the town.
As Narragansett gained reputation for its products (cheese, sheep, horses and grain), commercial activities expanded in the town. Narragansett became popular as a tourist destination in the 19th century.
Although the American Civil War precluded the growth of tourism in the town, tourists returned to the town after the end of the war.
The construction of the Narragansett Pier Railroad in 1876 aided the expansion of the town as a resort center.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the introduction of the automobile further enhanced Narragansett’s status as a tourist destination.
On September 12, 1990, the Narragansett Pier burned to the ground, in what is referred to as darkest day in the history of the Pier. A new Narragansett Pier Casino was erected in 1905.
Peter Boss, a native of Narragansett, formerly did race car driving and raced in the Euro Formula 3000, European Le Mans Series, barber Dodge Pro Series, etc. He retired in 2005.
Ted Leo, the American singer and songwriter, lives in Narragansett.
