History of Taunton

Taunton was founded in 1637 by settlers from England and the area was officially incorporated as a town in September 1639. Majority of the people who settled in Taunton, Massachusetts were from Taunton, Somerset, so the settlers naturally chose the same name for the new inhabited town.

The land of Taunton was purchased from the Nemasket Indians in 1637 and the native families relocated to present-day Canton, Massachusetts. The town was reincorporated as a city in May 1864.

Industrialization in Taunton commenced as early as 1656 when the first successful iron works was established on the Two Mile River in a place that is now part of Raynham. The Taunton Iron Works continued to operate for more than two centuries till 1876. Many more iron industries were established in Taunton in the 17th and 18th century.

Taunton became the center of iron-making industry in the 19th century, using bog iron from the swamps in the surrounding area to produce stoves, tacks, and machinery. Several textile mills were also in operation in Taunton, as well as other industries such as felt and brick making.

At the same time, Taunton was a major shipping point for the grain that was harvested from the inland farm areas of Massachusetts. The advent of the railroad further enhanced transportation of goods and accessibility to and from Taunton.

  • Taunton is one of the oldest towns in the US, being founded in 1637. The region was referred to as “Cohannet, Tetiquet and Titicut” by Native Americans before the area was settled by the English.
  • Elizabeth Poole played a significant role in the founding of Taunton and is often referred to as the foundress and matriarch of the town. She financed the first dam and mill that was built in the town for the manufacture of bar iron.
  • Taunton was a site for various skirmishes such as King Philip’s War and the American Revolution.
  • Taunton is known as the “Silver City” because in the 19th century, the town was a center of the silver industry. Companies such as F. B. Rogers, Reed & Barton, Poole Silver, produced good-quality silver goods in the city.
  • Taunton city has, since December 1914, provided a large light display every December of every year on Taunton Green. As a result, besides being known as Silver City, it is also known as Christmas City.
    One of the most successful companies in Taunton during the 19th century was the Mason Machine Works that produced machinery for the cotton and weaving industry. The company also manufactured steam locomotives. It was founded by William Mason.
  • The Taunton Municipal Light Plant, which was formed in 1897, today produces electric services to almost 40,000 customers in Massachusetts.
  • The historic Taunton City Hall which was built in 1848 and expanded in 1896 was damaged in an arson fire in 2010. The city hall was added to the US National Register of Historic Places in December 1977.

Emily Levesque, an Assistant Professor of Astronomy at the University of Washington who received the Annie Jump Cannon Award in 2014 for her cutting-edge work on gamma ray bursts, was born in Taunton.

Catherine Anna McKenna, the first woman to be admitted to practice law in California was born in Taunton in August 1875. She served on the Supreme Court of Wyoming and California and the US District Court.
