Scituate was settled back in 1627 by former residents of Plymouth together with immigrants hailing from Kent County in England. Scituate was initially under the governance of the General Court of Plymouth. However, in October 1636, Scituate gained its 'independence' as it was established as a separate entity.
Scituate derived its name from the Wampanoag word for cold brook- satuit. The name 'Scituate' is in reference to a brook that runs through Scituate. Interestingly, Scituate, Rhode Island was named by former residents of Scituate, Massachusetts. In 1717, a section of the western region of Scituate was ceded to Hanover while in 1788, another part of the town became a part of Marshfield. The last change to the borders of Scituate took place in 1849.
A seacoast town, Scituate has been a fishing town right from time. Scituate was also renowned for extensive sea mossing. Bordered by Massachusetts Bay on the eastern side, Scituate has had a long and storied history with the sea. Back in 1984, eight men died after a schooner got grounded off the infamous Third Cliff. They were frozen while holding on to the ropes of the vessel's rigging.
Back in the early 1800s, during the War of 1812, Scituate was the site of a minor miracle. A British naval squadron was deterred by two young girls at the Old Scituate Lighthouse. The girls did this by playing the drum together with a fife loudly enough to strike fear into the hearts of the naval party. That infamous incident is known as the "American Army of Two." Today, a modest fishing fleet is still present in Scituate.
The Old Scituate Lighthouse is still an ever-present sight in Scituate. Built in 1811, it was the eleventh lighthouse to be constructed in America. It was initially closed down in 1850 during the erection of the Minot's Ledge Light before it was opened again in 1852. The Old Scituate Lighthouse was equipped with a Fresnel lens in 1855 and is still very much a top tourist attraction in Scituate.
Tourists are welcome to pay a visit to Scituate Harbor. An official town center, Scituate Harbor is complete with a wide variety of restaurants, shops, artists and entertainment venues. Scituate Harbor is also perfect for waterfront activities such as fishing.
History buffs can also visit the Old Oaken Bucket house. The oldest part of the house was built in the sixteen hundreds. The Old Oaken house is famous for its association with author and playwright Samuel Woodworth. Scituate is also the location of the Lawson Tower. The Lawson Tower is a picturesque water tower with an observation deck that presents viewers with a tranquil skyline view of South Shore.
Ted Donato is a former hockey captain who graduated from Harvard. Ted Donato went on to a successful thirteen-year career in the National Hockey League. Over the course of a distinguished career, Ted Donato turned out for the New York Islanders, New York Rangers, and the Ottawa Senators among others. He played over 700 games, scoring 150 goals and winning an NCAA championship during his career.
The late William Cushing, one of the first six associate justices of the U.S Supreme court, also had ties to Scituate. He was the longest-serving of the original six associates serving for 20 years and 352 days until his death.
