European explorers visited the region that is now Plymouth twice before the Plymouth Colony was established, one of them being Samuel de Champlain (in 1605) who called the region Port St. Louis. The region was named New Plimouth by Captain John Smith, the leader of the Jamestown, Virginia Colony.
Before the arrival of the Mayflower Pilgrims in 1620, the area was a village of the Patuxet people of the Wampanoag tribe. The Wampanoag people were however almost entirely wiped out by two plagues that afflicted coastal New England in 1614 and 1617, opening up the area for the arrival of the Mayflower Pilgrims.
The town of Plymouth was settled in and established by English separatist Puritans, also known as Pilgrims, in December 1620. Their ship, the Mayflower, first anchored in the harbor of Provincetown, Massachusetts a month earlier on November 11, but they officially disembarked on 21st December.
In the 19th century, the people of the town relied on farming, rope making and shipping for survival, and with time, the town became a regional center for fishing and shipbuilding. Industrialization grew and the Plymouth Cordage Company, established in 1824, became the largest manufacturer of rope and cordage products in the world.

Richard Claxton “Dick” Gregory, the African-American civil rights activist, social critic, entrepreneur, writer, conspiracy theorist, comedian and actor, lived in Plymouth from 1973 till his death at age 84 in August 2017.
