The town of Norwood was initially one of the fourteen communities that made up Dedham, nicknamed the mother of towns. Norwood was first settled in 1678 by Ezra Morse, a Native American. Morse built a sawmill in the part of the town where the first set of families were concentrated. That part is now known as South Norwood.
The first settlers and families in the community were essentially farmers. The town was officially incorporated in 1872. The name of the town derives from Norwood town in South London, England.
A Minuteman company was organized in the area of Norwood during the American Revolution, captained by Aaron Guild. Aaron Guild led the campaign to fight off the British forces marching on Lexington and Concord to take hold of the ammunition that was stored there.
In the 1930s, the Municipal Airport in Norwood was opened, leading to population growth and more industrialization in the town. The economic growth and population increase continued till the 1950s, despite the change from heavy industries to light manufacturing during this time. However, by the 1970s, there was a decline in population in the town and an increase in house construction.
During his pre-inaugural tour of New England, Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the US, passed through Norwood.
The Oak View Mansion in Norwood was built in 1868 by Francis Olney Winslow. The mansion took two years to complete and was a scene for continuous social events. Some of the people who visited the Oak View Mansion were President Calvin Coolidge and Supreme Court Justice William Howard Taft.
The town square in Norwood is dominated by Norwood Memorial Municipal Building, which is the town hall. The building has a 50-bell carillon tower which houses the Walter F. Tilton Memorial Carillon.
The Walter F. Carillon is the seventh-largest carillon in the US and is listed on the US National Register of Historic Places. It is one of the nine carillons in Massachusetts.
The first library in Norwood was owned by Revd. Jabez Chickering. When the area was still known as South Dedham, Revd. Jabez began to loan his books to his parishioners in 1790.
The Morrill Memorial Library building was donated to Norwood by Mr. and Mrs. George H. Morrill in 1898 following the death of, and in honor of, their daughter who died of typhoid fever. The architect of the Morrill Memorial Library was Joseph Ladd Neal.
Frank Gilman Allen, the politician and businessman from Massachusetts lived in Norwood during his active periods as a businessman and politician. He was born in October 1874 and was both two-time Lieutenant Governor and 51st Governor of Massachusetts.
Keith A. Adams, the former American professional football player, was born in Norwood in November 1979. He played as a linebacker in the American National Football League for seven seasons. He is a World Bowl X champion.
The Major League Baseball pitcher, Charles James Bowles, was born in Norwood in March 1917. He played for the Philadelphia Athletics in 1943 and 1945.
The eleven-time winner on Champions Tour, Allen Michael Doyle, born in July 1948, was raised in Norwood. He played professional golf on the Nike Tour and PGA Tour, in addition to the Champions Tour.
