History of Barnstable

Barnstable is a town on Cape Cod. The name of the town derives from Barnstaple in England. In 1602, Bartholomew Gosnold was the first to explore the area and the town was one of the first places settled in at Plymouth County. It was incorporated in 1639.

The set of people who first settled in Barnstable were farmers and were led by the founder of Barnstable, Revd. Joseph Hull. In memory of Joseph Hull, a tablet was erected in 1939 during the 300th anniversary of the establishment of the town.

As soon as the town was incorporated, the settlers engaged in agricultural and fishing activities. Salt works were also done by some of the early settlers of Barnstable. Although more than 800 ships were already harbored in Barnstable by the 1800s, the arrival of the railroad in 1854 led to the decline of sailing in Barnstable.

Barnstable grew in reputation as a tourist destination in the late 1800s and attracted notable people to its shores. Till date, it remains a place to visit, especially during the summer months.

The town of Barnstable has many beaches and attractive sites which makes it an awesome place to visit. Some of the significant sites and historic buildings in Barnstable are listed on the US National Register of Historic Places.

In Barnstable, the only surviving civic element of the colonial origin of the village of Centerville is the Ancient Burying Ground. The cemetery is the oldest cemetery in the village and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (1987).

The bestselling author of The Finest Hours, A Rose for Mary and Black Irish, Casey Sherman, attended Barnstable High School. Sherman is also a screenwriter and journalist. He received several recognitions for his works; Truth and Justice Award (2010), nomination for Massachusetts Book of the Year (2010) and New Hampshire Literary Prize (2010).
