History of Avon

The area that is now Avon was originally part of Farmington and was first settled in 1645. The parish of Northington was established in the northern part of Farmington in 1750 to support a Congregational church that was accessible to the local residents of the town. The first pastor of the congregation arrived in the town in 1751 and was a graduate of Yale Divinity School.

In 1828, the Farmington Canal was opened in the town and this brought more business and activity to the town. The residents of the area were spurred to get incorporated as a town because of the prospects of commercial and industrial growth and eventually became incorporated as a town in 1830.

Northington was the area that became incorporated as Avon and the name of the town was chosen after County Avon in England. The commercial and industrial growth that was anticipated did not happen after the incorporation and the town never expanded. The rural town became a suburban community in the 1900s.

In the 1960s, the residents of Avon rejected a proposal for the Interstate 291 expressway to pass through their town.
