History of Westford

Westford was formerly a part of Chelmsford. It was settled in Chelmsford in the 1660s at least five years after the formation of Chelmsford in 1655. Things picked up after Westford was officially named as Chelmsford's West Precinct. Its first meetinghouse was picked, and its First Parish church was established in 1727. Westford was officially incorporated in 1729 before its official town boundaries were made in 1730 and readjusted in 1974.

In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Westford' s primary exports were apples, granite, and worsted yarn. Worsted yarn especially was a specialty of the Middlesex County town. The Abbot Worsted Company of Westford was proclaimed to be the pioneering outfit when it came to using camel hair in making worsted yarns. Westford has acted as a residential suburb for the industrial factories of nearby Lowell and Boston. In the nineties, Westford was home to branch offices of tech companies such as Samsung, Seagate, Iris Associates and Red Hat.

Westford is the central ground for quite a number of yearly events. At the beginning of every year in January, the Westford Funfest start things off with its annual Snow/Ice Sculpture contest. Two months later in March, the Westford Funfest holds its famous Breakfast with The Bunny.

Actor Aaron Stanford was born in Westford. The forty-one-year-old actor is famous for starring roles in 'X2' and 'X-Men: The Last Stand.' He also had a leading role as Birkhoff in the CW action series 'Nikita.' Football star Michael Fucito has deep family ties to Westford. Now retired, he was drafted by the Seattle Sounders in Major League Soccer.

The late Ellen Henrietta Swallow Richards was educated at the Westford Academy. Ellen Richards was famous for her work in sanitary engineering, environmental chemistry, and industrial engineering. The propounder of the home economics movement, she was the first woman ever admitted to the famous Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
