History of Raynham

TThe area that is present-day Raynham was first settled as part of Taunton town in 1639. Taunton town was itself founded by Elizabeth Pole, and is the first town to be founded by a woman in the US. Raynham was incorporated as a town in April 1731.

Roger Williams, the proponent of abolishment of slavery, payment of Indians for lands acquired from them, and separation of church and state, fled to the Raynham area in 1636 when he was trying to avoid conviction for heresy and sedition by the General Court of Salem. The Wampanoags offered him refuge in the area for three months.

Bog iron was discovered along the banks of the Two Mile (Forge) River in 1652 and an iron works was started by a team of 23 people between 1652 and 1656. The eastern part of Taunton where the iron works was situated came to be the town of Raynham.

For more than two hundred years, the iron works were the dominant industry in Raynham and operated until 1873. The people of Raynham also engaged in shipbuilding activities and used the Taunton River to promote their shipbuilding activities.

The railroad came to Raynham in the 1840s and the tracks ran from Boston to New Bedford. The tracks were located in North Raynham. Besides the iron works industry, in the 1800s and 1900s, Raynham had other industries such as a tack factory, sawmills, a grist mill, a bleachery, a straw-hat factory, etc.

There are various sites of attraction in Raynham such as Raynham Racetrack, Borden Colony Complex and Johnson’s Pond. The Raynham racetrack park has a Promenade Lounge and simulcast racing center that features simulcast racing and live entertainment.

The Borden Colony complex is a site that has baseball, softball and soccer fields for sporting activities. The complex covers more than 300 acres of land.

At the Johnson’s Pond, people enjoy fishing activities, picnicking, boating and skating activities.

Wat Nawamintararachutis, a working Thai Theravada Buddhist temple in Raynham, is one of the few Thai Buddhist temples in the US that have a Thai Buddhist monk in the temple.

Notable Residents

Frederick Charles Anderson, a Union Army soldier in the American Civil War was born in March 1842, orphaned at a young age, and adopted by a family in Raynham. He received the US Medal of Honor for his actions in the Battle of Globe tavern in August 1864.

Tobias Gilmore, a former slave purchased by a Captain John Gilmore of Raynham, enlisted in the Continental Army during the American Revolution.

The American radio play-by-play announcer for the New England Patriots of the NFL, Gilbert A. Santos was buried in Raynham in April 2018. He was inducted into the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame.
