History of Lynn

The area that is now known as Lynn used to be inhabited by the Naumkeag people before European colonists arrived. The people from England settled in Lynn some years after the first successful English colony in North America (Virginia) was established (1607) and Mayflower arrived in Plymouth (1620).

The Lynn area was first settled by Edmund Ingalls in 1629 and John Tarbox in 1631. The area that encompasses Lynn was initially incorporated as Saugus in 1631. When more settlers arrived in Lynn, more independent towns were formed, such as Reading (1644), Lynnfield (1782), Saugus (1815), Swampscott (1852) and Nahant (1853). Lynn was incorporated as a city in 1850.

Lynn became an early center of industry such as shoe-making and tannery in 1635. The shoe-making industry in Lynn led to the development of the city in the early 1800s. Railroad came to Lynn in the early 1800s and by 1816, a mail stagecoach was already operating through the town of Lynn. Two decades later, twenty-three stage coaches were operating from Lynn to Boston daily.

Later in the 19th century (1883), some of the shoe manufacturers in Lynn came together to invest in the electric industry and series of mergers led to the formation of General Electric in 1892, an electricity company that had its two original plants in Lynn and Schenectady.

  • One of the earliest labor strikes in the US took place in Lynn in February 1860 when the shoemakers in the town marched through the streets protesting reduced wages. The action is known as the New England Shoemakers Strike of 1860.
  • Lynn was the world-leader in shoe making at the beginning of the 20th century when 234 factories in the town produced more than one million pairs of shoes daily. However, the last shoe factory closed in 1981.

Notable Residents

Frederick Douglass, the popular American abolitionist, writer, and statesman moved to Lynn with his family in 1841 and lived there for a long time.

Ralph Merry, the founder of Magog, Quebec, was born in 1753 in Lynn.

Ruth Law Oliver, a pioneer American aviator in the 1910s, was born in Lynn in May 1887. She received her pilot’s license is 1912.
