Framingham, situated on the ancient trail called Old Connecticut Path, was first settled in 1647. The first settler was a European (John Stone) and he settled on the Sudbury River west bank. The Nobscot Hill area of the town was occupied by Tantamous, the Native American leader before King Philip’s War in 1676. The town of Framingham was incorporated in 1700.
The town of Framingham participated in the Battles of Lexington and Concord of 1775 by sending out military personnel of about 130 men to fight in the battle. One of the men was injured in the battle.
Before the American Civil War (1861-1865), members of the abolitionist movement used to gather annually in Framingham. At their meeting in 1854, copies of the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850 were burnt and present at that meeting were William Lloyd Garrison, Sojourner Truth, William Cooper Nell, Lucy Stone, Wendell Phillips and Henry David Thoreau.
The Dennison Manufacturing Company was founded in Framingham in 1844. The company produced jewelry and watch box and was started by Aaron Lufkin Dennison. The company expanded into industrial complexes and was merged into Avery Dennison in 1990.
The railroads came to Framingham in the 1880s and Framingham celebrated its Tercentennial in 2000 and became a city on 1st January 2018.
Crispus Attucks, the American dock worker born in Framingham in 1723, was the first person to be killed in the Boston massacre. As a result, he was the first American that was killed in the American Revolution.
Mary Beth Cahill, the American political figure who was the manager of Senator John Kerry’s US Presidential campaign, was raised in Framingham.
Yvonne M. Spicer, the first African-American woman to be elected into office as Mayor of Massachusetts was born in Framingham in 1962. She was inaugurated on 1st January, 2018.
Katherine Beth Nolan, the popular American sports personality, television host on ESPN, and comedian, graduated from Framingham High School in 2005. She was formerly the host on the Fox Sports’ weekly show that won a Sports Emmy Award in 2016.
