Foxborough Business and Home Security Facts

Based in New England since 1972, we’ve worked in the Foxborough area for decades. We know the landscape and we have good relationships with local police and fire officials. Our team of dedicated employees live in the communities we serve. Our customers are our neighbors.

Foxborough boasts low crime rates, among the lowest even in comparably-sized small towns,
and is rated safer than 98% of U.S. cities. Its crime rate is lower than 1 in 1,000, with almost no
violent crime and very little property crime. While only 20 miles away from Boston, it retains a
high level of security and public safety.

History of Foxborough

In 1664, a small settlement was unintentionally formed on the banks of the Wading River when
a couple rafting northward missed their intended destination and, as intrepid pioneers are wont
to do, decided to make the best of their situation and settle where they landed.

Other colonists slowly followed, creating the community that would eventually become Foxborough,
Massachusetts. When the town’s appeal for formal incorporation finally succeeded in 1778,
shortly after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the town aptly chose a name that
honored a staunch supporter of American independence in the British Parliament, Charles
James Fox.

The history of Foxborough’s first chief industry proves that necessity truly is the mother of
invention. When a young girl named Betsy Metcalf couldn’t afford an imported straw bonnet she
had her eye on, she decided to try her hand at making one herself. Her homemade straw hat
turned out so well that her friends began asking her to teach them the craft, and it spread
through the town, to Boston, and beyond.

Foxborough quickly became the hub of the American straw hat industry, and soon the Union Straw Works claimed the title of the world’s largest straw hat factory. Foxborough continued to grow into the mid-1800s, and a proper town center, still visible today, was laid out in 1857.

After the Civil War, the town continued to grow in importance and modernity. Foxborough’s
businesses thrived, partly due to the town’s role as a popular stop on the trip between Boston
and Providence. New inventions including electric lights and natural gas propelled the town into
the modern age, and a promising new electric devices manufacturer took the place of the
waning straw hat industry as the area’s chief employer.

However, by 1900, the Van Choate
Electric Co. was in dire financial straits and not providing the well-paying jobs residents had
hoped for. That same year, a fire destroyed the Union Straw Works. A few months later, with the
Union Straw Works still under fire watch, three firefighters died in a fire that engulfed the Town
House, destroying the town’s public offices and school.

In 1908, the Bennett brothers founded what eventually became the Foxboro Company, bringing
another large manufacturer to the the community. When the U.S. became involved in World War
II, the Foxboro Company produced components for British torpedo systems, and Foxborough
joined the rest of the nation in imposing rations and other austerity regulations to support the
war effort.

In the post-war era, the population of Foxborough and the surrounding area grew as the region
continued to industrialize and develop. Contemporary Foxborough continues to thrive as part of
the metropolitan Boston area and home to the New England Patriots.

Things to See and Do in Foxborough

The main attraction in Foxborough today is Gillette Stadium, constructed in 2002. With their
popularity and success in the NFL, the Patriots have sold out every home game - over 200 -
since 1994. The stadium also hosts Major League Soccer, major college football games,
concerts, and other special events.

The Hall, a state-of-the-art museum space opened in 2008
in the adjacent Patriot Place shopping and entertainment center, uses the latest audio and
visual technology to illustrate the rich history of New England football and immerse fans in
various aspects of the Patriots experience.

In addition to sports and entertainment, Foxborough’s small but scenic town center boasts the
Gothic Revival-style Memorial Hall, constructed in 1868 to honor lost Union Soldiers and now
listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Outdoor recreational opportunities in Foxborough include hiking, horseback riding, and
exploring the trails and Native American sites in F. Gilbert Hills State Forest. While evidence is
unclear about the origins of the several stone structures found in the area, it is speculated that
they date to pre-Columbian Algonquin settlements. These mysterious artifacts, along with the
scenic beauty of the forest, provide an opportunity for exploration and contemplation.

Notable Residents

In more recent years, Foxborough has been home to quite a variety of famous figures, including
the last President and First Lady of South Vietnam, R&B singer JoJo, and Sam Berns, a
teenager with progeria and the subject of the inspirational HBO documentary Life According to
Sam. As a safe community with a thriving economy and a short commute to Boston or
Providence, Foxborough is an attractive community to call home.
