History of Everett

Everett was first settled in 1630 and was initially part of Charlestown, and then Malden. In 1870, Everett separated from Malden and became incorporated as a town. Twenty years later, in 1892, the town of Everett became incorporated as a city. The first mayor of the city, Alonzo H. Evans, was also elected in 1892.

The city of Everett was named after Edward Everett. Edward Everett was a popular figure and he served in many capacities. He was a US Representative, US Senator, Minister to Great Britain, 15th Governor of Massachusetts, US Secretary of State, and President of Harvard University.

The first terminal for importing liquefied natural gas in the US was the Everett Marine Terminal in the Island End part of the town and the Distrigas of Massachusetts started using it in 1971.

  • In 2011, the city of Everett changed its city council to a unicameral body making it the last city in the US to have a bicameral legislature.

Notable Residents

Colonel Barbara Janet Bishop, the Director of Women Marines between January 1964 and August 1969, graduated from Everett High School in 1938. She was also Military Secretary to the Commander in Chief of Allied Forces in Southern Europe.

Matthew Washington Bullock, the American football player and coach, lawyer, administrator and college professor born in September 1881 graduated from Everett High School. He played high school football in Everett and became the first African-American to coach the Everett High School football team and predominantly white high school.

Mary Eliza Mahoney, the first black woman to graduate from a nursing school in the US was buried in Everett. She was born in May 1845 and prospered as a nurse in a predominantly white society, challenging discrimination against black women in the nursing profession.

George Jackson Mead, the American aircraft engineer, most notably known for being one of the founders of Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, was born in Everett in December 1891. He served as the president of the US National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA).
