History of Bedford

The first settlers in Bedford were Europeans and they settled in the town in 1640. The land they settled in was a portion of the land granted to Governor John Winthrop and his deputy Thomas Dudley in the late 1630s. In 1729, Bedford was incorporated as a town.

The early settlers in the town of Bedford were farmers and survived on agricultural activities, particularly subsistence farming. The Shawsheen and Concord rivers that flow through Bedford enhanced the farming activities of the settlers.

The area where the Concord river flows through the town was referred to as the “Great River Meadow” by the early settlers in Bedford. The area is a 19 km section of freshwater wetlands which is now referred to as the Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge.

In 1775, the Militia and Minutemen of Bedford met in the oldest building in the town (Kidder Fitch Homestead Tavern), carrying the Bedford Flag, and they from there marched into the Battles of Lexington and Concord.

Things to See and Do in Bedford

The Bedford Flag which was carried by the Minutemen of Bedford on 19th April 1775 to Concord is the oldest surviving intact flag in the entire US. The flag is located at the Bedford Free Public Library, Bedford and is on display. There is a Latin motto on the flag, Vince Aut Morire which means "Conquer or Die."

In Bedford, there are two great stones known as “The Two Brothers” that were put in place in 1638 by Governor John Winthrop and Deputy Governor Thomas Dudley. The rocks are currently in the Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge and can be accessed through the Altmann Conservation Area.

The Two Brothers were put there on the eastern bank of Concord River by the two men to divide their lands; Winthrop owned the land south of the boulders while Dudley owned the land north of the boulders.

The Job Lane House in Bedford was built in the early 1800s (around 1713) by Job Lane III, the grandson of one of the first settlers in Bedford (Job Lane I). In 1973, the Job Lane House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the US. It is currently run as a historic house museum.

The Fitch Tavern in Bedford, where the Militia and Minutemen met for breakfast in April 1775 still stands till date. It withstood the American Revolution and the Civil war, as well as other occurrences in Bedford.

Notable Residents

Joseph Michael Bellion, the former American football player, lives in Bedford with his family. While playing for the US Naval Academy in 1960, he won the Heisman Trophy and Maxwell Award. He played for the Boston Patriots between 1965 and 1967. In 1977, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. During his career, he played as a halfback.

Doug Coombs, the American alpine mountaineer and skier, was born in September 1957. He was one of the people who helped start the extreme skiing sport in North America and globally. He was the World Extreme Skiing Champion in 1991 and 1993.

Jimmy Fowler, the actor and publisher of YouTube content is a native of Bedford. He featured in over thirty television shows between 2008 and 2017.

Helen Ramsay was born in Bedford in April, 1931. She is an American entertainer and singer, best known for being part of the Lawrence Welk group called The Champagne Ladies between 1947 and 1949. She was replaced in the group by Roberta Linn.
